2026 Remittance Report: Where Senders Lose Money and Who Wins

A data-driven look at international money transfer pricing in 2026 — based on 2 years of daily rate history across 14 regulated providers, 68 corridors, and anonymised comparison data from our platform.

Updated May 31, 2026By CompareRemittanceRates.com

Executive summary

Based on our 2026 data, the single biggest source of lost value for international senders is provider choice — not hidden fees or timing. The total opportunity cost we've measured across user-submitted audits is $11K ($211 per sender per year on average).

Across the corridors we track, no single provider wins everywhere. The overall leader — Remitly — offers the best rate on only 58.5% of days, meaning senders who default to one provider pay a structural premium the rest of the time.

Timing also matters — but mostly on a small number of corridors. The most volatile corridor in our data, AED → INR, shows a spread of 6.63% between its best and worst days of the week. For most other corridors, provider choice has a larger effect than timing.

Methodology

This report aggregates data from three first-party sources maintained by CompareRemittanceRates.com:

  • Daily rate snapshots captured twice per day from 14 regulated money-transfer providers across 68 corridors, for a 2-year history.
  • Anonymised user comparisons made on the platform — used to measure corridor demand and device mix.
  • User-submitted rate audits via the Rate Report Card — used to quantify opportunity cost from suboptimal provider choice and timing.

Volatility is computed as the coefficient of variation of rates within each reporting month. “Best rate days” are counted by ranking all providers on each capture date for each corridor and awarding the top rank. Provider click data is aggregated across all sessions and is used as a proxy for reputation-driven behaviour. Demand data uses a 90-day rolling window.

All figures are directional; rate data reflects the values fetched at capture time from each provider's public pricing, and may differ from amounts actually quoted at transfer time. No personally identifiable information is used or disclosed in this report.

1

How much money senders lose

The biggest lever for most senders isn't fees — it's picking the wrong provider for their specific corridor.

Total opportunity cost we've measured

$11K

Across 54 user-submitted rate audits — money that would have stayed with senders had they used the best provider for their corridor and timing.

That's an average of $211 per sender, per year.

No single provider wins everywhere

Where timing matters most

A handful of corridors show meaningful rate volatility — the rest are stable enough that timing offers little edge.

Volatility is expressed as the coefficient of variation of rates observed across the window. Higher values = bigger swings = more room (and risk) for timing gains.

4

The best day of the week to send

For the most-searched corridors, there is a measurable day-of-week pattern in average rates.

Spread = percentage difference between the average rate on the best and worst day of the week. Bigger spreads mean timing matters more for that corridor.

Position vs. reputation — what actually drives clicks

Ranking #1 is the strongest single predictor of which provider users pick, but familiar brands still pull meaningful share even when they don't win on price.

Click share by ranked position

Position #1 (the best-value provider) captures the majority of clicks, but not all — reputation and user familiarity still pull meaningful share to lower positions.
